Florida Fish & Wildlife

Dennis David, a FWC staff member, after leaving a recorded message for an employee with Alley Cat Allies, went on to discuss the feral cat policy under review with an unidentified individual in the room. David referred to feline advocates slated to appear before the Commission as “crazies” and dismissed written commentary as “shit”.

The unidentified person in the room asked: “Should I wear my uniform when I’m shooting these neighborhood cats?” Mr. David laughingly responded: “Only after we adopt this policy.”

U.S. Fish & Wildlife

Bert Byers, Public Affairs Officer, regarding the fate of cats trapped at Crocodile Lake Refuge in Key Largo that are not adopted: “Euthanizing is always an option. That is the normal humane thing to do.”

Surfside, Florida
Town Official

Residents were outraged at last year's family Halloween party as Surfside's Vice Mayor Tim Will paraded around the event dressed as a starving, homeless cat – wearing a hobo hat, cat makeup and holding a can that read, "Will work for Meow Mix". Some parents left in disgust. Others have called for the vice mayor's resignation. Said one homeowner, "Behavior such as this should be of great concern to all Surfside residents, cat lovers or not."

Akron, Ohio
City Council

The following exchange took place during a 2/10/02 Akron City Council retreat, between Council Members Daniel Horrigan (Ward 1) and John Otterman (Council Vice President):

"I thought the County was supposed to build a new cattery. I don’t want to say cat-eatery, but cattery."

"That’s that Chinese restaurant over in North Hill." (John Otterman) (Laughter)

Other comments include a statement by Councilman Michael Williams , that he would "sleep fine" if 10,000-20,000 cats were killed as a result of the new ordinance.
